Friends to Host Bull Mountain Park Groundbreaking

On Friday, June 24 at 4 p.m. the Friends of Bull Mountain Park will host a golden shovel event and groundbreaking to celebrate the start of construction at Bull Mountain Park.

Park plans call for a nature play area, trails, shelter, picnic tables, benches and more. The golden shovel event will celebrate the start of work on the nature play area, accessible trail, landscaping and construction of the picnic shelter. Volunteers have already completed soft trails, picnic tables, benches, signage, a tool shed and restroom facilities.

The Friends of Bull Mountain Park are a group of neighbors that formed to promote the purchase and development of the park. The Friends received a grant from Metro to help develop part of the park, and teamed with Lango Hansen to plan the development.

Bull Mountain is a 10-acre park with woods, open space and riparian areas along a small creek. The park was purchased in 2012 using funds from a $17 million park bond approved by Tigard voters in 2010.

This partnership is a success in both the eyes of the city and residents. “Development of this park would not be possible at this time without the help from the Friends. They have done a great job organizing and raising funds for development,” stated Parks Manager Steve Martin.  Toraj Khavari, Chairman and President of the Friends agrees. “What does it take to raise more than a half million dollars in cash and volunteer in-kind work? A good cause, a strong community commitment, and a worthy goal with the end in sight.”

Total costs for park development are estimated to be $563,000.  The Friends report partnerships with Metro’s Nature in Neighborhoods Program, City of Tigard, Tigard Noon Rotary, Austin Industry and Parrish Family, Mr. Tree and Pacific West Roofing, along with many generous private donors.
